It was a perfect start for Sarri, who took charge of his first official match as a Chelsea Manager.

Chelsea got their pre-season under way as they won 1-0 against Perth Glory thanks to an early goal from Pedro at the Optus Stadium.

The work was done by Callum Hudson-Odoi with the youngster doing wonderfully well on the left to cross into the Spaniard to net inside just five minutes of the game.

Maurizio Sarri’s opening game got off to the perfect start, while the team played with a high intensity and were aggressive in defence to win the ball back, which would have been encouraging to see from the Blues.

However, with the several changes in the second half the game lost some of its rhythm, which is often the case in the second half of friendlies, but the Blues saw out the win

PLAYER RATINGS

Marcin Bulka

The youngster was a real bystander during the first half as Perth struggled to get forward at all with Chelsea pressing high. Had one comfortable save to make and flapped at a corner into the box as well. 5

Davide Zappacosta

Looked to attack at every occasion and put in a couple of nice crosses into the box, getting round the outside of Pedro and he looked to be aggressive with the ball at his feet.

In the second half he really got forward again and linked up well and it was a very decent performance from the Italian. 8

David Luiz

Defensively had really nothing to do and when he had the ball he was often inside the Perth half. Incisive passing and really looking to get the ball forward, which was a very encouraging sign.

Carried that on in the second half as well, and the fact he played so much of the game was great for his fitness after last season. 7

Ethan Ampadu

Like Luiz, didn’t really have anything defensively to do, but the encouraging thing was his work on the ball as he looked to be positive, not just pass from side to side with no injection of pace. 7

Emerson (on for Alonso at half-time)

Showed a real energy when he came on and had some great feet as he looked to attack on the left. Some good defensive work as well. 6

Cesc Fabregas

Looked like the shackles were off for Fabregas and he was enjoying playing in the pocket of space, linking up with Jorginho and playing in some lovely balls into the front men and keeping the pace going.

Took a deeper role when Jorginho went off and he carried on providing the energy, but controlled the game more. 8

Tiemoue Bakayoko (on for Jorginho at half-time)

Couldn’t really get into the game too much and in this midfield he might struggle to get much game time. Going to be an interesting rest of pre-season for him.

Ross Barkley

Got into some good areas and playing in a position that really seemed to suit him in midfield, getting to be more creative. A couple of chances for the Englishmen that he couldn’t take advantage of

Played further forward in the second half and again got into some great positions. An exciting evening for Barkley and encouraging going forward. 8

Mario Pasalic (on for Hudson-Odoi at half-time)

Played in the role that Fabregas did in the first half and found himself in good areas, hitting the post soon after coming on. Encouraging half from the youngster. 7

Pedro

In the perfect position for his opening goal as he linked well with Hudson-Odoi. Had a good partnership on the right as well with Zappacosta and he looked to be dangerous with runs behind the defence.

Came close to a second in the second half as well and it was great for him to take the reins with Hazard and Willian unavailable. 8

Alvaro Morata

Had a bit of a battering from the Perth defence at times but looked to be aggressive and linked up well with the midfield. Just didn’t quite have the chances that he would have wanted. Looked a little lost during the game though and struggled a bit. 5

Substitutes

Tomas Kalas (on for Ampadu)

A pretty comfortable evening when he came on, not really tested too much. 6

Tammy Abraham (on for Morata)

Really worked hard to try to get behind the Perth defence and use his pace. Fabregas found him well a couple of time, but he couldn’t convert. 6

Ola Aina (on for Zappacosta)

Looked to get forward when he can, but Perth were pushing the defence back a bit as they searched for an equaliser. 5

Lucas Piazon (on for Pedro)

Had a shot saved but not really the amount of time to influence the game. 5

Charly Musonda (on for Barkley)

Not enough time to influence the game. 5
